At Tenterden Infant School, during term 2, all children in Foundation Stage are screened to assess their understanding of language. We use an online screening tool called Speechlink.  This screening helps us to identify if your child has any Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The online Language Link Assessment used looks at a child’s understanding of spoken words and ideas. If the screening identifies that a child would benefit from further support they are placed on the Language Enrichment Program.

The Language Enrichment Program was created by East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Tryst (EKHUFT) and we have been running it in school for a number of years. The children learn language skills such as; attention & Listening, following instructions, categorising words, question words, prepositions, nouns, verbs and sequencing. The program is run in school for groups of about 6 children once a week for 2 terms. At the end of the program children are re-language linked and if necessary a referral may be made to NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services.

Children may be re-language linked at any point while in primary school if we have continued concerns and then will be either supported by in school interventions or by the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services. These children will have a S&L plan in place which follows the Assess, Plan, Do and Review process. This forms part of our Graduated approach to SEN. Speech and Language appointments can take place in school and at The Rainbow Centre in Ashford. 

We have great working relationship with our local Speech and Language Therapists who are based at the Rainbow Centre in Ashford. They provide treatment, support and care for children and young people who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing.
